The floating-gate memory (FGM) effect was discovered by D. Kahng and S. M. Sze in 1967, while working at Bell Laboratories. This seminal discovery has subsequently given rise to a large family of memory devices including EPROM, EEPROM, and Flash Memory. Because of its unique attributes of nonvolatility, ultra-low power consumption, ultra-high density, and compatibility with CMOS processes, FGM has enabled the invention of nearly all modern electronic systems, and brought unprecedented benefit to humankind.
FGM-based systems include the cellular phone, tablet computer, smart IC card, digital camera, digital TV, MP3 music player, pacemaker, implantable defibrillator, GPS and ABS. Of particular importance is the fact that FGM has empowered technology for the development of artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, internet of everything, and robotics. These systems have reshaped our world and ushered in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
In this talk, we will present the basic operational principle of FGM, review its evolution in the past 52 years, discuss various emerging technologies, and consider its long-lasting impact to our modern society.
施敏先生简介：
施敏，1936年出生于南京，美籍华人。现任中国工程院外籍院士、美国国家工程院院士、中国台湾中央研究院院士、中国台湾工业研究院院士、IEEE Life Fellow。1991年获得IEEE电子器件最高荣誉奖（Ebers奖）；2017年与Gordon E Moore（摩尔定律之父）共同获得IEEE Celebrated Member（尊荣会员）称号，目前全球仅10位科学家获此殊荣，包括1973年诺贝尔物理奖得主Leo Esaki、2000年诺贝尔物理奖得主Herbert Kroemer及2009年诺贝尔物理奖得主George E. Smith。
施敏先生是国际著名的微电子科学技术与半导体器件专家和教育家，是非挥发MOS场效应记忆晶体管（NVSM）的发明者，在金半接触、微波器件及金属氧化物半导体场效应晶体管（MOSFET）技术等领域作出了奠基性、前瞻性和开创性的贡献（2017 IEDM Plenary Awards评）。施敏先生发明的非挥发MOS场效应记忆晶体管（闪存）已成为当今世界上集成电路产业主导产品之一，是移动电话、笔记本电脑、IC卡、数码相机及便携式电子产品的关键部件，还促进了人工智能、大数据、云计算、物联网、机器人和固态驱动器等技术的发展。因此项发明，他已多次获得诺贝尔物理奖提名。
施敏先生在微电子科学技术著作方面举世闻名，所著的《半导体器件物理学》(Physics of Semiconductor Devices)是目前全世界所有工程及应用科学领域最畅销的教科书之一，曾被翻译成六种语言，销售超过600万册，引用次数达47500多次（谷歌提供），有“半导体界的圣经”之称。
据不完全统计，施敏先生先后在国内获得清华大学（2000年）、北京大学（年代不详）、上海交通大学（2003年）、安徽大学（2004年）、合肥工业大学（2004年）、西安交通大学（2006年）、哈尔滨工业大学（2014年）、苏州大学（2018年）、电子科技大学（2018年）、台湾科技大学和台湾中山大学等高校荣誉教授称号并讲学，并曾在国内山东大学（2003年）、北京交通大学（2010年）、河北大学（2011年）、宁波大学（2018年）、北京工业大学（年代不详）等学校讲学。
施敏先生还在剑桥大学、代尔夫特大学、斯坦福大学、瑞士联邦理工学院、东京理工学院等高校担任客座教授并进行讲学。
